Available data from the Ghana Road Safety Commission shows that, about three thousand 623 people have so far lost their lives through road carnage in the first quarter of the year.

A Road Safety Ambassador, Patience Sarbah, who dropped the hint when launching a project dubbed: “Light the Streets” in Koforidua noted that the phenomenon is worrying and called on stakeholders especially drivers to adhere to road safety regulations to help reduce the number to the barest minimum.

According to her, the absence of street lights on the streets is a major factor that is causing accidents on the roads since most of the accidents occurred in the night.

Miss Sarbarh further stated that it is her responsibility to contribute to the growth of the country.

It is for this reason that she has embarked on the campaign to solicit funds to purchase street lights to light Paakro community roads in the Akwapim South District.

She said it is her intention to extend the project to other Municipalities and districts in the region if it becomes successful.

She therefore appealed to all to support the project financially to help achieve her dream.

The Eastern Regional Marketing Manager for ECG, Abraham Lincoln Damtse, said the provision of street lights and community lightening is not their responsibility as perceived by the public.

He maintained that the street light poles, bulb holders and bulbs are the sole responsibility of the district assemblies and citizens in the various localities whiles the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) provides power.

Mr. Damtse advised the public to cultivate the habit of maintenance to help prolong the lifespan of street lights. He said the street light levy on electricity bills to customers goes to the government for the provision of street lights and other development projects.

He therefore called on the general public to pay their light bills to enable ECG deliver on its core mandate.
