AFCON 2019: CAF names 7 legends as ambassadors

The Confederation of Africa Football (CAF), has named seven legends of Africa football, as the ambassadors for the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2019 in Egypt, with no Ghanaian making the cut.

The continent’s flagship tournament will kick off June 21 and ends on July 19, 2019,  in Egyptian cities of Cairo, Alexandria, Ismailia and Suez.

The seven ambassadors are, Samuel Eto’o from Cameroon. A former Barcelona and Inter Milan man won the CAF Player of the Year Award on four occasions and also won the AFCON twice in 2000 and 2002.

Mahmoud El Khateeb from Egypt. The Egyptian who also won the AFCON in 1986 and was the first Egyptian player to win the Africa Player of the Awards in 1983.

Two Ivorian legends, Yaya Touré and Didier Drogba were also included in the seven ambassadors. The duo, have won combined six Africa Player of the Year Awards with Touré holding four and Drogba with two.

Yaya Touré captained the Cote d’ivoire team as they won the AFCON in 2015.

Algerian legend Rabeh Madjer was part of the Algeria 1990 squad who won the AFCON. The former Porto man also won the best player award in 1987.

Nwankowo Kanu from Nigeria. The former Arsenal and Monaco star featured in six AFCON editions and also won the Africa Player of the Year Award on two occasions, while Senegal legend El Hadji Diouf was the seventh man in the list.

Diouf crowned the CAF Player Award on two occasion as well playing a key role in Taranga Lions golden generation that made the headlines across the world in early 2000’s.
