The Auditor General and head of Ghana’s Supreme Audit Institute (SAI), Daniel Yaw Domelevo has expressed disappointment in some corrupt public office holders especially government appointees who use their office and power to promote corruption at the expense of the citizens.

He described such officials as the people the public serves and not them serving the public interests and sees their highly acquired knowledge as useless in societal development because they don’t use their acquired knowledge skills to work towards the development of the country.

He said this in a speech delivered at the 6th International Institute of certified Forensic Investigation Professionals (IICFIP), Global Forensic Conference at the Institute of Local Government in Accra:

The conference is on the theme: “Harnessing Forensic Investigation Skills and Tools for Effective Skills and Tools for Fight against White Color Crimes”.

According to Mr. Domelevo: “Transparency and accountability are key and we cannot help than to fight white collar crimes, anyone who chooses to hold any public office or in a position of trust must stand ready to be transparent and accountable for his or her stewardship”.

He added that: “A call to a public office in my point of view is a call to serve the public interest and not to loot public resources.”.

“Recently I was addressing a gathering and I said when people are called public servants I get confused because I don’t know whether they serve the public or the people or the public rather serves them…Very unfortunately these are people who are highly educated, very knowledgeable in society but whose knowledge is useless because it doesn’t help society, all we do with our knowledge is to suppress and deny our people what they are entitled to.  Very unfortunate,” he indicated.

Mr. Domelovo further reminded the gathering of the constitutional principles of State Policy particularly a principle under Article 35/8 of the 1992 constitution which says, “the state shall take steps to eradicate corrupt practices and abuse of power. He advised that we Africans should stop celebrating when appointed to public offices but rather we should uphold the principles for the development of the respective countries.

The AG commended  IICFIP for taking the step in harnessing forensic investigation skills and tools for the fight against white collards crimes.

Global Chairman of IICFIP,  Dr. Rama Subramaniam for his part said it was an important factor for the selection of the theme.

He said, white color crime has become a big problem in Africa hence the decision to speak on the theme.

“One of the best articulations we had was by the Auditor-General and I believe that he has impacted a lot of knowledge. Every year, we make the theme more relevant in the location of the conference. Today white collar crime is a very serious matter and the conference focused on that”.

A senior organizer and country director of IIFCIP, Bismark Abode Allegra, appealed to African governments to equip forensic investigators with the tools needed to carry out their work efficiently and called on colleague auditors to be forthcoming and help reduce the corruption canker.

“Forensic is becoming the norm of the day so there is the need to equip people who have that skll. When it comes to technology, its moving at a faster rate so each and every day you need to update and equip people that are in the field so that they can do a good job. There are a lot of investigative Auditors out but they fear to come out, some even if u call them they wont speak on Radio or Tv “

He thanked his colleagues James Adongo,Alhasan Mohamed Cisa,Cosmos Amoah,Patience Kumbl, Emma Asabea Ansah, Emmanuel Frimpong and Dick Gordon Anaman who is chartered Accountant and registered Auditor for their commitment and effort for the success of the conference.
