'Agitations arising from creation of new Regions could create serious security problems'

Panelists on GBC’s Current Affairs Programme, “Talking Point”, say the hullabaloo and agitations arising from the creation of the new regions is expected, adding that this could create serious security problems if they are not dealt with.
The panelists raised questions about who should or should not vote in the scheduled referendum. The creation of the new regions has generated a lot of agitations prompting President Akufo-Addo to justify processes towards to the creation of the new regions which he says is in line with provisions of the constitution and best practices elsewhere.
Making his submission, a Lawyer and Lecturer at the Central University, Yaw Oppong said there is the need for the Electoral Commission (EC), to educate the public on the laws governing the creation of the regions for clear understanding before the referendum.
On security issues, Security Analyst, Emmanuel Sowatey asked that emotions be managed so they do not escalate looking at the attachment people have towards their place of abode especially the region they hail from.

He asked that more consultations be done to bring a better understanding to the creation of the regions.
Meanwhile, a member of the Joint Consultative Committee on the proposed Oti Region, James Oberko said if the agitations are more than the acceptance, then there is a need to take a second look at the whole process.
