Agona West Assembly embarks on exercise to reduce open defecation

The Agona West Municipal Assembly has embarked on an aggressive sensitisation drive in the Municipality to construct household latrines for houses without toilets to stop open defecation.

Mrs Justina Marigold Assan, Municipal Chief Executive for Agona West made this known at separate sensitization programes to educate the residents at Ahamadonko in the Agona West of the Central region.

The rest are Adwendaho, Adwenambantem, Beposo and Gyarmanfom.

The MCE who was accompanied by Mr.George Freeman, Municipal Environmental Health and Sanitation Officer and other officials of the Assembly said open defecation was an offense and appealed to the chiefs, Assembly members, unit Committees, and opinion leaders to support the exercise to succeed.

She said the Municipality would soon been declared “open defecation free” to help prevent cholera and other communicable diseases that affected productivity.

The MCE said the Agona West Assembly was collaborating with the UNICEF and the Community Water and Sanitation Agency for the construction of the household latrines in every town and village.

Mrs Assan noted that Ghana spent millions of Cedis to raise quality living standards of the people into fighting diseases including; cholera due to insanitary conditions.

Mr Freeman said over 2,000 households in the Municipality were provided household toilets and reminded the residents that sanitation was a shared responsibility.
