Black Stars legend André Dede Ayew has pledged GHS 10,000 to support the development of wheelchair basketball and para sports in the Volta Region.
The donation was announced at the closing ceremony of the 6th Inter-Regional Wheelchair Basketball Championship held in Ho over the weekend.
Addressing athletes and officials, the former Ghana captain urged para athletes to remain focused and take pride in their talent.
“I am a sports person. We will always be there for sports people. Keep believing in yourself, have fun, keep enjoying, and help the nation,
“And I will also pledge GHS 10,000 to support you,” Ayew said.
His pledge was met with loud cheers from players, coaches, and fans who gathered to celebrate the success of the championship.
The donation adds to Ayew’s growing community engagements away from football.
In recent years, the 36-year-old has spent time with young people and played community football in areas including Aboabo, Kumasi, and Tema Newtown, using the visits to share his experiences and encourage young athletes.
The 6th Inter-Regional Wheelchair Basketball Championship brought together five regions Greater Accra, Ashanti, Bono, Central, and the host Volta Region to compete and promote para sports.
The organizers of the championship said support from personalities like André Ayew gives hope for the growth of para sports in both the Volta Region and across Ghana.
