Arsene Wenger has warned Unai Emery that Mesut Ozil could lack motivation at Arsenal because he has stepped away from Germany’s national team
Ozil was heavily criticised for his performances at the World Cup in Russia this summer and even clashed with a fan after Germany’s 2-0 defeat to South Korea which led to their exit from the tournament.
After the World Cup, Ozil announced his decision to quit the national team and will not be available for selection as Joachim Low’s side aim to qualify for Euro 2020.
Ozil has endured a subdued start to Emery’s reign at Arsenal and Wenger believes that the midfielder’s decision to not play at international level could have a negative impact on his club career.
‘I believe that Germany need Ozil,’ Wenger told SportBild.
‘I hope that Low can convince him to come back.
‘Ozil is a super football player, he was not the worst at the World Cup.
‘I did not love that he left Germany’s national team because a small piece of motivation disappears when you know that you do not have to be ready for a World Cup or a European Championship.’
