Rugby League Federation Ghana (RLFG) brought together approximately 22 sports teachers, education and sports officials, and Rugby League representatives for the Ashanti Region Rugby League Sports Teachers Review and Development Day on 30 September 2026 at the Afigya Kwabre South Education Office.

The day focused on reviewing the progress of Rugby League in schools, sharing experiences, strengthening the knowledge of sports teachers and setting clear priorities for 2027.

Sports teachers from Primary, JHS and SHS levels participated, representing schools including Aduman SHS, Pentecost SHS, Afigya Secondary Technical, St. Michael SHS, Akrofrom, Apagya, Akrowa, Mowire, Aduamoa, Kyeremkrom and Amoako.

The programme was attended by Mr David Akomeah Asokwah, District Director of Education for Afigya Kwabre South and Vice Chairperson of the Ashanti Region Rugby League. He thanked RLFG and the sports teachers for their commitment and encouraged them to continue creating opportunities for young people through Rugby League.

Ashanti Regional Manager Julius Amevor also highlighted the progress being made across the region and the growing talent among young players.

«“We are happy with the growth and journey of Rugby League in the Ashanti Region, particularly the increase in participation among young people and schools and the talent and potential we are seeing in our athletes. We also want to thank all the sports teachers who have taken the time to be here, review where we are and help us plan for the year ahead.”»

RLFG Technical Director Marshall Nortey led a practical technical session covering Rugby League rules, positioning, coaching, player management and game-day responsibilities. Julius Amevor, Regional Manager (Technical) and Level 1 Coach & Referee, and George Asamoah, Regional Manager (Organising) and Level 1 Coach, also supported the technical and organisational discussions.

Sports teachers shared their experiences, challenges and lessons from delivering Rugby League in their schools, creating an open discussion on what is working and where further support is needed.

Attention then turned to 2027, with participants discussing school competitions and festivals and how to strengthen the structure and delivery of Rugby League across the region.

The message from the day was clear: developing Rugby League requires more than developing players. It requires knowledgeable teachers, capable coaches, strong organisation and effective collaboration between schools, RLFG, education officials and sports stakeholders.

The review and development day marked an important step towards a more structured 2027 programme, with participants leaving with clearer priorities and a shared commitment to move from discussion to action.
