Ghana will be aiming to pick one of the slots to the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Game in beach volleyball when they host the qualifiers at the Laboma Beach Resort on January 2, 2020.

The country has been chosen to host the four-day qualifying event, with Ghana’s Black Spikers drawn alongside Togo, Benin, Cote d’Ivoire and Nigeria.

The top two teams in the group will qualify for the next stage of the qualifiers.

Preparation underway

In an interview, the General Secretary of the Ghana Volleyball Association, Mr Alhassan Sumani, disclosed to the Daily Graphic that the venue for the competition had been secured and preparation was underway to make the place ready for the championship.

“Security is of a great essence to us as an association. We have made an arrangement with the security services to have adequate security in place for the visiting countries and the fans who will patronise the event so we can enjoy the games with no incident,” Mr Sumani said.

Although the competition involves teams from the West African sub-region, Mr Sumani believes Ghana will secure the tickets in both the beach volleyball and indoor volleyball during the qualifiers for Tokyo 2020.

Qualification tournament

Meanwhile, Ghana will also be participating in the final qualification tournament of the Indoor Volleyball Championship in Egypt, which is scheduled to start from January 4 to January 13, 2020.

The championship involves Ghana, Tunisia, Algeria and Cameroun and hosts Egypt in a round-robin competition, with the winner picking the sole ticket to the Olympic Games in Tokyo.
