Ghana’s Black Princesses endured a disappointing start to their 2026 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup campaign after suffering a 3-0 defeat to Ecuador in their opening Group C fixture at the Arena Sosnowiec in Poland. Charles Sampson’s side struggled to match Ecuador’s intensity and attacking threat throughout the encounter.
Ecuador made a quick start and broke the deadlock early before doubling their advantage in the 16th minute. Ghana found it difficult to settle into the game as their opponents controlled much of the first half and limited the Black Princesses’ opportunities to build meaningful attacks.
The Ghanaian side attempted to respond through set-pieces and spells of possession but lacked the quality and precision needed in the final third. Ecuador remained well organised defensively and protected their two-goal advantage to take a 2-0 lead into the break.
After the restart, the Black Princesses pushed forward in search of a way back into the contest, but Ecuador continued to frustrate their attacking efforts. Ghana’s attempts to commit more players forward created spaces at the back, which Ecuador eventually exploited to score a third goal and seal a convincing victory.
The result leaves Ghana bottom of Group C after the opening round and puts pressure on the team ahead of their remaining fixtures. The Black Princesses will face South Korea on Wednesday, September 9, at 1pm before taking on France on Saturday, September 12, at 4pm, with improved results needed to keep their hopes of reaching the knockout stage alive.
