The Importers and Exporters Association of Ghana, has lauded moves by government to suspend the export of all leafy vegetables to the International Market from the 1st of next month.

According to the Executive Secretary of the Association, Samson Awungobit Asaki, even though the Association has not been consulted, the Ministry of Food and Agriculture must use the period of suspension to address challenges facing the Sector.

Speaking to GBC’s Radio Ghana, Mr. Awungobit Asaki reiterated the need for government to rope in more extension officers to educate farmers to achieve intentional best practices.

Meanwhile, Deputy Director in-charge of Research at the Savannah Agriculture Research Institute, Dr. Roger Kanton, says Ghana can meet the EU criteria for the production and export of vegetables through maximum monitoring and supervision, from the farm- to-harvest and export gate.

Dr. Kanton told GBC’s George Ankrah, that Ghana has in the past exported vegetables to the European market under hygienic conditions, adding that this can still be done if policy makers support scientists to deliver.
