The Bank of Ghana (BoG) has engaged members of the Ecumenical Community as part of its ongoing stakeholder consultations and public education on the proposed Non-Interest Banking and Finance (NIBF) framework.
The engagement, held on Monday, August 31, 2026, at the Bank of Ghana’s headquarters in Accra, was led by the Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr. Johnson Pandit Asiama.
The meeting provided an opportunity for the Bank to address concerns, clarify aspects of the regulatory framework and deepen public understanding of Non-Interest Banking and Finance.
Dr. Asiama explained that the NIBF framework is intended to complement, rather than replace, conventional banking. He said the framework is designed to provide consumers with greater choice while promoting a sound, inclusive and non-discriminatory financial system.
“Our focus is on its economic and developmental benefits, including wider access to financial services, product diversity, and consumer choice,” the Governor said.
He stressed that the Bank of Ghana’s role in regulating Non-Interest Banking and Finance is strictly institutional and regulatory, rather than religious.
“The Bank does not pronounce on religious beliefs; our responsibility is to regulate institutions and products,” he stated.
Dr. Asiama further emphasised the importance of sustained engagement and public education as the framework progresses, noting that effective stakeholder consultation requires dialogue between the regulator and the public.
“Public education cannot be one-way,” he said.
The engagement forms part of the Bank of Ghana’s efforts to consult key stakeholders and provide clarity on the proposed framework, while ensuring that members of the public understand its objectives, regulatory implications and potential benefits to Ghana’s financial sector.
