A Deputy Finance Minister of Ghana and Member of Parliament for Atiwa East Constituency, Madam Abena Osei-Asare, has affirmed the necessity of the Debt Exchange Programme, led by Ken Ofori-Atta, to be launched.

According to her, though responses and reactions from Ghanaians have been unpleasant and difficult towards the Programme, it is very necessary at this point of the Ghanaian economy.

The Deputy Minister made this statement on the GTV’s Breakfast Show while answering questions that emerged after the Finance Minister launched the programme on Monday, December 5, 2022.

She explained that the country is in difficult times, and what the Finance Ministry decided to do is to clear all debts accrued by the country and those of State Owned Enterprises (SOEs).

Madam Osei-Asare also said what the government intends with the debt exchange programme is some sort of burden sharing by domestic investors and the government of Ghana. She reiterated that there will be no haircut on the Principal of investors, as the Finance Minister had pointed out.

She further asked Ghanaians to bear with the government on the critical measures it had taken to restore Ghana’s economy.
