Ghana has officially completed its US$3 billion International Monetary Fund (IMF) bailout programme after the IMF Executive Board approved the country’s final programme review, unlocking a last disbursement of about US$371 million.
The approval brings total disbursements under the Extended Credit Facility (ECF) programme to US$3 billion, marking the successful conclusion of the economic recovery programme that began in May 2023 following Ghana’s 2022 economic crisis.
In a statement issued on Monday, July 27, 2026, the Ministry of Finance said the completion of the programme reflects the country’s progress in restoring macroeconomic stability.
According to the Ministry, the government has maintained fiscal discipline, reduced inflation, strengthened external reserves and implemented key reforms that have laid the foundation for sustained economic growth.
The Ministry described the outcome as a major milestone in Ghana’s economic recovery.
“The successful completion of the programme reflects the significant progress Ghana has made in ensuring economic stability,” the statement said.
With the bailout programme now concluded, Ghana will transition to a new phase of engagement with the IMF through a 36-month Policy Coordination Instrument (PCI).
Unlike the ECF programme, the PCI does not provide financial support. Instead, it is designed to help countries maintain sound economic policies and continue implementing reforms while boosting investor and development partner confidence.
The Ministry said the new arrangement would support the government’s ongoing economic reform agenda without additional IMF financing.
“This non-financing PCI will support the Government’s reform agenda and help sustain confidence in Ghana’s economic policies,” the statement added.
The government expressed appreciation to Ghanaians for their patience and support throughout the reform programme.
“Government expresses its sincere appreciation to the people of Ghana for their resilience, patience and unwavering support throughout the reform programme,” the statement said.
It also thanked the IMF Executive Board, IMF Management and Staff, development partners, civil society organisations and the private sector for their continued support during the programme.
The Ministry reaffirmed the government’s commitment to protecting the gains made under the IMF-supported programme and continuing reforms aimed at building a stronger and more resilient economy.
“Government remains committed to protecting the gains achieved so far and implementing ongoing reforms to build a stronger, more resilient and more prosperous economy for all Ghanaians,” the statement concluded.
