Gov’t signs $81.67m loan facility for Eastern Corridor roads

Government has signed an 81.67 million dollar loan facility, for the implementation of the first phase of the Eastern Corridor Road Development Programme.
The programme will see the construction of two parallel roads from Dufor Adidome in the Volta Region, through to Asikuma Junction and Asutuare to Aveyime.
The project is being funded by the African Development Bank, AfDB.
At the signing ceremony in Accra, a Deputy Minister of Finance, Abena Osei Asare and a Deputy Minister of Roads and Highways, Anthony Karbo, signed on behalf of Government, while the Country Manager of the AfDB, Dr. Sebastian Okeke, also initialled for the Bank.

Government has declared 2020 as a year of roads.

The signing of the Eastern Corridor Road Development Programme, therefore forms part of a larger strategy for delivering excellent road network in the country.
The Programme is to serve as a catalyst for regional integration and contribute to the overall growth of the economy.
Deputy Minister of Finance, Abena Osei Asare said the project when completed, will lead to an efficient transportation system that promotes trade at Ghana’s ports and corridors.
Deputy Minister of Roads and Highways, Anthony Karbo thanked the African Development Bank (AfDB) for its support towards Ghana’s infrastructure development over the years.

He said the Ministry has set up a Project Coordination Unit to oversee the day to day management of the project.

The Country Manager of the AfDB, Dr. Sebastian Okeke, said the Eastern Corridor Road Development Programme, falls within the Bank’s strategic projects for Ghana.

The project is expected to be completed between 2020 and 2024.
