The month of May marks International Internal Audit Awareness Month. The International Internal Audit encourages individuals and institutions around the globe to celebrate and promote awareness of the Internal Audit Profession to stakeholders. To this end, the Institute of Internal Auditors is collaborating with the necessary stakeholders to help educate the public on Internal Auditing.

As part of efforts to create Awareness on the International Internal Audit Month, the Institute of Internal Auditors will ensure that all misperceptions of the profession are dispelled.

President of the Institute of Internal Auditors, Daniel Quampah said the awareness will enhance the business community’s knowledge of the essential role internal auditing plays in strong organizational governance, internal control and effective risk management. He explained that Auditors do not intentionally find faults and expose companies financial activities.

“Auditing as a profession is less than 100 years now as the profession evolved. There are misconceptions about the profession that have rooted over the years. We are working hard to clear those things from people’s minds that is the key reason we are having the awareness month. For example, people perceive that internal auditors are accountants by training. It’s a misconception that we want to clear, so people perceive that internal audit is like corporate police function the way we approach our work, it’s like we’re just finding fault and trying to expose people who work hard in other functional areas and these are some of the misconceptions.” he said.

Mr. Quampah noted that when directors and management fully appreciate the value of internal Auditing, they tend to be more willing to adequately resource and effectively utilize the internal audit activity.

Mr. Quampah calls on all Internal audit professionals to play an important role in raising awareness and elevating the profession. Creating Awareness, he said, is an all-hands-on-deck approach.
