Engineering and technical works ongoing on the Karpowership should be completed by October 31, 2019, as work is 98 percent complete.

The 470 Megawatts Powership, which was operating on Heavy Fuel Oil, was sailed from its previous point in Tema Fishing Harbour to the Sekondi Naval Base to utilize Natural Gas from the Western Enclave.

Briefing journalists at Takoradi in the Western Region on the progress of work, the Communications Director of the Ghana Gas Company, Ernest Owusu Bempah mentioned that soon the first gas from the Atuabo Gas Processing Plant will be pushed into the Karpowership.

Government took a decision to move the 470 megawatts Karpowership to the Sekondi Naval Base in August this year to enable operations to draw natural gas from the Atuabo Gas Processing plant to power it.

At the moment work is near completion to achieve this objective.

Mr. Owusu Bempah said currently nitrogen is being pushed through the pipelines to flush them to that ensure there are no leakages.

The process is also to clear the lines for the free flow of gas, adding that all things being equal, the powership will become operational by October 31.

He pointed out that the eight-kilometer onshore and the 1.3 km offshore pipelines linking the Karpowership, the tie-in point, have all been successfully laid, test of electrical connections and the metering gauge have all been fixed.

Mr. Owusu Bempah said Ghana Gas will be supplying the powership 60 to 90 minimum continuous stable flow ,mcsf, of gas on daily basis, adding that the Company has more than 350mcsf gas and would be able to meet the demands of the powership.

Mr. Owusu Bempah commended engineers and all the staff who worked tirelessly to ensure the successful relocation of the powership  to Sekondi.

He also touched on the success story of the company’s indigenization adding that it has saved the country millions of Ghana cedis.
