Oil and Gas contributes 4.5% to Ghana’s GDP in the last 8 years

Between 2013 and 2021, the oil and gas sector contributed an average of 4.5% to Ghana’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) out of about 20 sub-sectors.

In 2021 also, domestic gas formed about 85% of Ghana’s gas demand for power generation.

The current conversation about climate action has heightened the push to transition from fossil-based fuels to cleaner energy sources with possible implications for Ghana’s nascent oil and gas industry.

Speaking at the maiden University of Ghana Public lecture held in Accra on the topic “Energy Transitions: Reflections on the state of Ghana’s Oil and Gas Industry,” the Minister for Energy, Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh highlighted measures through the energy transition framework document that will aid Ghana to attain clean energy fuel and find the balance between clean form of energy and the use of hydrocarbons by 2070

The Energy Minister also spoke of the government’s bilateral collaboration with other countries to ensure efficient clean fuel production in Ghana.
