Ten charged for allegedly hacking into Universal Merchant Bank accounts

Ten men who are alleged to have hacked the accounts of Universal Merchant Bank at Airport City, Accra and stole  GH¢326 million have been charged for stealing.
 
They are: James Akwesi Kwarteng, Paa Kwesi Adokwei, Joseph Kofi Owusu, Ernest Acheampong and one Philip.
 
The rest are: Stephen Kofi Tampori, Michael Nana Yaw, Joseph Marinoni, Chief Kingsley Oboefe and Good Luck Otada. They all pleaded not guilty.
 
Prosecution told the court presided over by Jane Harriet Akweley Quaye that, the accused persons hacked the bank’s account on the 22nd of July after they opened 18 bank accounts all subscribing to VISA services.
 
According to Prosecution, between the midnight of 22nd and 23rd of July, the accused persons with eight others who are at large, hacked and transferred more than  GH¢326,120 000 into the accounts opened.
 
Prosecution said in the same period, about  GH¢278, 000 was withdrawn using VISA cards and through Mobile Money.
 
The bank noticed the theft and blocked the VISA withdrawals of the suspected accounts.
 
The accused persons, following their inability to make further withdrawals went to the Banking Hall to cash some monies and were arrested.
 
Their lawyers pleaded for bail but the court refused and asked them to re-appear on the 14th of August to enable the judge to study the facts before ruling on the bail application.
