The Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr. Johnson Bandit Asiamah, has revealed that the Ghanaian cedi has appreciated by 37 percent as of October 17, 2025, marking a significant turnaround in the nation’s economic recovery.
Speaking at the official launch of the Cedi @ 60 anniversary in Accra, Dr. Asiamah described the development as a reflection of Ghana’s resilience and the outcome of deliberate, disciplined policies implemented over the past two years.
“Your Excellency, the Vice President, the evidence is compelling. Headline inflation is now at 9.4 percent as of September 2025, and the cedi has appreciated by 37 percent as of October 17,” he announced to applause from dignitaries.
According to him, the cedi’s remarkable performance has earned it recognition from the World Bank as the best-performing currency in sub-Saharan Africa for the first eight months of 2025. Ghana’s gross international reserves, he noted, currently stand at around US$12 billion, providing a strong buffer against external shocks and boosting investor confidence.
“These gains are not by accident,” Dr. Asiamah stressed. “They are the result of hard, sometimes unpopular, but principled decisions fiscal consolidation by government, a tight monetary policy stance by the Bank of Ghana, and renewed confidence from both investors and the Ghanaian public.” He recalled the economic turbulence of late 2022, when the cedi depreciated by over 50 percent and inflation surged above 54 percent, describing the turnaround as a “hard won stability” that deserves protection.
The Governor emphasized that while Ghana is not yet where it aspires to be, the progress made demonstrates a renewed sense of confidence and discipline in managing the economy. “We are not yet where we want to be, Excellencies, but we are no longer where we were,” he remarked. “That is why this moment Cedi @ 60 is not just ceremonial. it is timely. It reminds us of how far we’ve come and challenges us to protect what we have gained.”
