Chieftaincy Ministry, House of Chiefs commit to resolving referendum issues

The Chieftaincy Ministry says it has engaged the leadership of the National House of Chiefs in order to resolve issues surrounding the brouhaha over the rejection of the upcoming referendum slated for December 17.

Last week, a press statement from the President of the National House of Chiefs, Togbe Afede said the House was against the government’s position.

According to the statement, the House of Chiefs is concerned about the adverse effects of partisan politics on local level development if this referendum goes through. But, Chairman of the Governance Committee of the National House of Chiefs, Ogyeahoho Yaw Gyebi said the statement does not represent the collective view of the House of Chiefs.

Speaking at the meet the press series in Accra, the Minister for Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Kofi Dzamesi said a meeting of the National House of Chiefs scheduled on the December 12 will see to resolving issues amicably before the referendum.

Mr Dzamesi said the ministry has come out with a national policy on religion.
