CJ to close down District Courts not up to Judicial Service standard

Ghana’s Chief Justice, Sophia Akufo has announced her readiness to close down any district court which does not conform to the standard of the Judicial Service.
According to her, the decision is part of efforts to strengthen the justice system, and provide quality justice delivery in the country.
Justice Sophia Akufo announced this when she paid a courtesy call on the Omanhene of Essikado, Nana Kobina Nketia in the Western Region.
Her visit forms part of a one week monitoring programme in the region. It is to inspect Districts and Magistrate Courts in the region. Also to interact with the Judicial Service staff including Judges, and Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives, (MMDCEs’).
The Chief Justice, later commissioned a court facility at Daboase in the Wassa East District.
After inspecting and assessing the facility, she said the building does not conform to the standard.
She therefore directed the District Assembly to use the facility for a communal service. The Chief Justice said her office has prepared a court modality for Metropolitan, Municipal and Districts, (MMDAs’)  in the country.
She said it is in the Local Government Act that MMDAs provide court facilities and apartment for Judges under their jurisdiction.
Later the Chief Justice and her entourage inspected the Sekondi and Takoradi District Courts.
She was not happy about the state of the two courts and urged the MCE Anthony K. K. Sam, to relocate the Takoradi court to an appropriate place where it can be accessed by the aged and the physically challenged.
She said plans are underway to train more Judges and improve the Judicial service.
The Omanhene of the Essikado, Nana kobina Nketia was not happy about how lands meant for development are being sold to politicians.
He said it is therefore important to protect and defend the constitution of the country since social and political expediency will not help the country to developed.
