Committee submits report on death of 2-year old boy in Wa

The Upper West Regional Minister, Dr. Hafiz Bin Salih has received a report from a five-member committee set up by the Regional Coordinating Council (RCC) to investigate the circumstances that led to the death of a two-year old boy at the Wa Municipal Hospital last month.

The Regional Minister Dr. Hafiz Bin Salih inaugurated the five Member Committee on November 12, 2019 to investigate circumstances that led to the death of the two-year old boy at the Wa Municipal Hospital on November 9, 2019.

Receiving the report, Dr. Bin Salih commended the Committee for working diligently to deliver the report and assured the people of the Upper West that after studying the document he will make sure the necessary actions are taken.

The two-year boy was allegedly denied treatment after a snake bite because he had no folder at the time he was rushed to the hospital. 

The Committee was among other things tasked to investigate the exact circumstances that led to the untimely death of the boy and establish whether or not there was professional and ethical breaches by the health officers on duty. 

The 5-member committee comprise a retired nurse, Alhaji Issaka Hassan, a Representative from the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association, Alfred Anzagira from Ghana Police Service, Detective Corporal Richman Ayittey, as well as Lawyer Frank Nimarkoh from Attorney General’s  Department,  and  Morris Banaamwine, a representative from the Media.

Submitting the report, the Chairman of the Committee, Alhaji Issaka Hassan, said in bit to do a thorough job, an extension was sought to help the committee to complete the work. 

“This committee was set up on the 12 of November 2019, to investigate circumstances that led to the death of a 2-year old boy who was transferred from Boli CHIPS compound to the Wa Municipal Hospital…The Committee was give two weeks to complete the work but in bit to do a thorough job, we realized it was not sufficient so we sought for extension from the minister which was graciously granted as a committee we have completed our job and we are here today to officially submit the report to the Minister” Mr. Hassan explained.

The Regional Minister Dr. Hafiz Bin Salih said certain recommendations and findings have been made by the committee and was hopeful that implementing the recommendations will bring sanity in the health sector in the region.

“And today they submitted the report to me, I’m going to study the report as much as possible and come out with a white paper on the report, they have made certain recommendations.”

“We shall look into it, those that are within our means we shall try as much as possible to implement them and those that will be beyond us shall be referred to the appropriate authorities, individuals or organizations for implementation. But I believed strongly that from this report and subsequently implementing the recommendations will lead to change in health care delivery in the upper west region” Dr. Bin-Salih stated.

Dr. Bin Salih observed that some health personnel in the region are facing challenges however some are not helping to manage the situation.

He noted that their attitudes toward patients are unprofessional and pledged to liaise with the appropriate authorities to ensure that health officers in the region uphold professionalism.
