A clinical trial evaluating a vaccine against the new coronavirus is expected to be tested on human beings today.

Testing will begin with 45 young, healthy volunteers with different doses of shots co-developed by the National Institute of Health and Moderna Incorporated.

There are no possibilities participants could be infected from the shots, because they have not tested positive for the virus itself.

The National Institute of Health is funding the trial, which is taking place in Seattle, USA. Public health officials say it will take a year and more to fully validate any potential vaccine.

Dozens of research groups around the world are racing to create a vaccine as COVID-19 cases continue to grow globally.
