The need for a global platform for election management bodies to meet and share best practices has been advocated by the Former Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission of Nigeria, INEC, Professor Attahiru Jega.

According to him, the face of elections keeps changing with the application of latest technologies.

Professor Jega who oversaw two elections in Nigeria said the stakes in every election are high as the future stability of countries especially those developing is hinged on an election, conducted with integrity.

He said regular interaction among election administrators remain key.

Professor Attahiru Jega said this in Accra at an engagement with the media.

Electoral management encompasses both the entity responsible for governing elections and the mechanisms, roles and functions this entity may have.

The Former Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission of Nigeria, INEC, Professor Attahiru Jega came to Ghana at the invitation of the Chairperson of the EC, Mrs. Jean Mensa.

He said the engagement had been fruitful. It was thus not surprising that he proposed the creation of an avenue for regular engagement among electoral practitioners.

While all democracies have an election administration of some kind, the responsibilities of this entity may vary substantially. However, as the agencies responsible for governing elections and referenda, Electoral Management Bodies are ultimately responsible for safeguarding the legitimacy of democratic institutions and the peaceful transitions of power.

Therefore, they need to ensure all aspects of any electoral contest meets global best practices.
