A dawn armed robbery attack on mobile money vendors in Fiapre, within the Sunyani West Municipality of the Bono Region, has left two people dead and two others battling for their lives.
The incident, which occurred around 7:00 a.m. on Wednesday, August 5, 2026, has sent shockwaves through the community, raising fresh concerns about the safety of mobile money operators in the area.
According to eyewitness accounts, three heavily armed men wielding AK-47 rifles stormed the area and launched a brazen attack on two young female mobile money vendors.
The assailants reportedly fired multiple gunshots indiscriminately to disperse residents and bystanders before making away with an estimated GH¢40,000.
In the chaos, a stray bullet fatally struck a resident identified as Ibrahim, who had stepped out in an attempt to observe the unfolding situation. His death has deepened grief and outrage among community members.
Moments after the attack, residents discovered another lifeless body at the scene, believed to be one of the suspected robbers, identified only as Fulani. The remaining two attackers managed to escape.
The two injured mobile money operators, who sustained gunshot wounds during the attack, are currently receiving treatment at the Sunyani Teaching Hospital, where medical staff say they are responding to care.
Police have since conveyed the bodies of the deceased to the hospital’s mortuary for preservation and autopsy, as investigations into the incident continue.
The Sunyani West Municipal Chief Executive, Mr. Kwasi Asante Boateng, has visited both the bereaved family of Ibrahim and the injured victims at the hospital. He expressed his condolences and wished the survivors a speedy recovery.
Speaking to the media, Mr. Boateng assured residents that security agencies are actively pursuing the perpetrators. He noted that the Municipal Security Committee is working closely with the police to strengthen security measures in the area.
“We are collaborating with the security agencies to ensure that those behind this heinous act are brought to justice. We urge residents to remain calm and support ongoing investigations,” he stated.
As of the time of filing this report, the police are yet to issue an official statement on the attack.
