The National Association of Local Authorities of Ghana says the current system of appointing MMDCEs and Assembly members is already partisan and voting YES in the referendum will not change anything.

In this wise, the reforming of Article 55(3) of the constitution must factor the inclusion of small parties and open for broader consultations with CSO’s and the Traditional rulers to make it less partisan.

The administrator of the Association, Andrews Bediako, speaking on GBC’s current Affairs programme, ‘Talking Point’, said evidence of the already existing partisan system is found in a recent survey that women aspiring to contest for Assembly positions were asked by their parties to step down, making the partisan mantra more obvious to the electorate.

The Director, Institute of Local Governance Studies, Dr. Nicholas Awortwi warned that if the two main political parties do not reach a consensus to work on Article 243(1) of the constitution and vote NO in the upcoming referendum, the local governance scene will be chaotic.

The parties need to work together in agreeing on both Article 55(3) and 243(1) because one has an overriding effect on the other.
