The Auditor-General, Daniel Yaw Domelevo says decentralizing Ghana’s payroll system is key to ensuring total eradication of ghost names from the government payroll in Ghana.
He said winning  the fight will therefore require that heads of management units at the regional and district levels are empowered by central administration to quickly eliminate names of those on separation or those who have died.
The Auditor-General Mr. Domelovo said this at  a briefing of heads of institutions and the media on the exercise to verify details of government employees in Takoradi in the Western Region.
According to Mr. Domelevo, seeing Ghana beyond aid and ensuring massive development required that those in the helm of affairs did the right things.
The two-weeks exercise in the Region, is expected to run simultaneously in all selected centers with over forty one thousand government staff expected to undergo the exercise.
In the Sekondi -Takoradi Metropolitan Assembly, eleven thousand people are expected to verify their status at the Regional Coordinating Council, the Teachers Resource center, Effia-Nkwanta Regional hospital and Takoradi Hospital, prisons and the SEKDEAF.
The Deputy Director, Central Government Audit Department, George Winful said getting a credible payroll system is  a collective responsibility of all government workers adding that there is the need to end the menace to save the country’s purse.
He mentioned that the problem of ghost names has been around for rather too long and needs to be corrected to make the system the credible.
The Deputy Western Regional Minister, Gifty Eugenia Kusi lauded the move by the Auditor-General to ensure that all irregularities are erased from the Government payroll to help secure state resources.
She also called on the heads of institutions to get  their staff  to avail themselves for the exercise.
