The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has criticised President Akufo-Addo’s decision to ease restrictions on public gatherings, saying, it is not in the nation’s interest.

National Communication Officer of the Party, Sammy Gyamfi, said the decision was taken for purely parochial political reasons.

Addressing the Party’s maiden virtual briefing in Accra, Mr Gyamfi, said the party is inclined to believe that, the decision was intended to pave the way for the EC to carry out the compilation of the new Voters Register.

Mr. Gyamfi said, the fact that Church and Mosque gatherings are limited to 100 people and services are to last for an hour, while the National Identification Authority (NIA) and EC have been given the freedom to operate for a period of 10 hours leaves much to be desired.

He said the Party is appalled by the EC Chairperson,  Jean Mensah’s refusal to honour an invitation by the National House of Chiefs, which was intended to promote dialogue on the EC’s entrenched decision to compile a new Voters’ Register for the 2020 General Elections.

Sammy Gyamfi reiterated the NDC’s determination to employ every legitimate means to stop the EC’s attempt to foist on Ghanaians”,  what he called  a “needless and wasteful voter register that is intended to disenfranchise millions of eligible voters, mostly in NDC strongholds.
