The Deputy Minister of Information, Pius Enam Hadzide, has hinted of plans to roll out a framework to restructure state owned media such as the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation, (GBC), the Ghana News Agency, (GNA), and the New Times Corporation and the Graphic Group of Communications.

He said despite challenges inherited in the running of these state media houses, government remains committed to reinvest in it to continue to serve the interest of those in the grassroots.

Mr. Hadzide was speaking at the third in the series of public lectures, by the Ghana Journalists Association, GJA, as part of its 70th anniversary.

The lecture which focused on the GNA, was on the theme:, “Efficient News-gathering Dissemination for Democracy and National Integration, the role of the GNA”.

Mr. Hadzide, noted that in a world where there are competing interests in news gathering, there is the need to adequately resource state media, which he said is immune to people’s political and parochial interests.

The General Manager of GNA, Kofi Owusu, said plans are advanced to digitalize operations of the GNA, to make it more appealing to the youth.

He said the agency is also poised to invest in improved modern technology to enhance news dissemination to Ghanaians both home and broad.

He asked other media organisation to outsource their newsrooms to the GNA, in an effort to expand its scope and reach.

The GJA President Roland Affail Monney, was unhappy that the once vibrant news agency has become a pale shadow of itself, a situation he said calls for an all hands on deck approach to address.

Delivering the lecture, a Former General Manager and Veteran journalist, Nana Appau Duah, underscored the crucial role of the GNA.

Mr. Duah asked stakeholders such as the Ministry of Information, the National Media Commission, NMC and media experts to fashion out growth policies that would ensure the GNA, is able to stand the test of time.

The Ghana news Agency, GNA, was established on March 5, 1957, by Ghana’s First President Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, as part of a comprehensive communication policy.

Other activities lined up for the GJA 70th anniversary include a blood donation exercise and a panel discussion.
