Du Bois Centre on path to becoming State-of-the-art memorial edifice

By Jonathan Thompson

Government has promised to assist in turning the Du Bois Centre into a tourism and a State-of-the-art memorial edifice in honour of the late Historian and Pan-Africanist, W.E.B Du Bois.

Making the promise at the 60th Anniversary of the passing of Dr. Du Bois in Accra, Deputy Minister of Tourism and Creative Arts, Mark Okraku Mantey, called on world leaders to work together in eradicating racial and social injustices that are fast robbing continents of their economic and political advancements.

He also noted that the legacies and ideals of Pan-African legends like Dr. Kwame Nkrumah and W.E.B. Du Bois should be revisited and applied in today’s world of unnecessary political and territorial conflicts.

The passion for a United Africa and a world without discrimination and social injustices formed the core of all speakers at the 60th Anniversary of the death of the late William Edward Burghardt Du Bois.

Many of them eulogised the late Pan Aficanist as a peace advocate and sociologist who used his talent and passion to work for African development after he was taken for granted in the United States, the country where he was born and raised on February 23, 1868. The US Ambassador to Ghana, Virginia Palmer, admitted her country lost such a gem to Afica but said America still believes in equality and the political ideals that the late W.E.B. Du Bois stood for.

Deputy Minister of Tourism and Creative Arts, Mark Okraku Mante, said Ghana welcomed Dr. Du Bois with open arms and the country will still honour his memory. He pledged the government’s plans to help turn the Du Bois Centre into an attractive state-of-the art tourism monument, just like they did with the Kwame Nkrumah Mausoleum.

The 60th Anniversary of the death of the late Historian and Pan-Africanist, W.E.B. Du Bois, in Accra brought together diplomats, international relations experts, historians, and relatives of the late Du Bois.
