One hundred and eight persons died in road accidents within the first quarter of this year in the Eastern Region, representing a 13 percent drop of the figure during the same period last year, which was one hundred and 24.

Eastern Regional Director of the National Road Safety Commission, Abdulla Bawa Ghamsah, who disclosed this to GBC’s Radio Ghana in Koforidua, said the number of accident cases in the first quarter increased from 268 recorded last year, to 333 cases recorded.

The figure represents a 13.6 percent increase.

Mr. Ghamsah revealed that one hundred and six of the accidents involved pedestrians who were knocked down by vehicles. 568 people suffered various degrees of injuries as a result of these accidents.

Mr. Ghamsah however observed that the passengers’ safety has improved because the Commission introduced some interventions geared at reducing road fatalities. He advised drivers to abide by traffic regulations and encouraged the District Assemblies to repair pot holes on their roads to help reduce road accidents.
