The Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has visited Pope John Senior High School and Seminary in Koforidua in the Eastern Region to inspect land earmarked for the construction of a science laboratory in honour of the late Minister of Defence, Dr Edward Kofi Omane Boamah.
The visit formed part of the Minister’s official tour of the Eastern Region on Thursday, January 29, 2026. During the visit to the school, Mr Iddrisu toured various science and ICT laboratories and assessed the proposed site for the construction of a modern, dedicated science laboratory.
Mr Iddrisu said the government of President Mahama had taken the decision to construct the facility to honour the late Dr Omane Boamah, an old student of Pope John Senior High School and Seminary, for his loyalty and dedication to the service of Ghana.
“I am happy on behalf of the government of President Mahama to assure the good people of Koforidua that the government will build a modern dedicated science laboratory in honour of the late Dr Edward Kofi Omane Boamah,” the Education Minister said.
According to him, the project is expected to strengthen science education at the school while serving as a lasting tribute to the late Defence Minister.
After the school visit, the Education Minister paid a courtesy call on the mother of the late Dr Omane Boamah to commiserate with the family, several months after his burial.
During the interaction, Mr Iddrisu offered words of comfort and reassurance to the bereaved mother, telling her that God would give her the strength to endure the loss. The mother, who was visibly moved, expressed appreciation to the Minister and all those who have supported her since the passing of her son.
Dr Edward Kofi Omane Boamah, who served as Ghana’s Minister for Defence, died on August 6, 2025, in a military helicopter crash while on official duty.
The Ghana Armed Forces Z-9 helicopter was travelling from Accra to Obuasi for an anti-illegal mining engagement when it crashed in the Adansi Akrofuom District of the Ashanti Region, killing all eight people on board.
