Accessible for books campaign, brainchild of Ghana Blind Union

The Ghana Blind Union has launched accessible books for all campaign, an alternative format for persons with reading disability.

Executive Director of the Ghana Blind Union, Dr. Peter Obeng Asamoah at the launch in Accra, said the initiative is to enhance education for the blind as they sometimes face challenges accessing reading materials. He said the visually-impaired want to access books with technology, noting that the world has moved on and Ghana should not be left out. Dr. Obeng Asamoah appealed to the Government and the Ministry of Education to ensure students with visual impairments are given the opportunity to access more reading materials.

The Ghana Blind Union has made strenuous efforts at introducing the visually impaired to more digital ways of learning and accessing information. Some of which are victor streams, orbit reader and tablet as well as laptops with screen reader devices. Some students with visual impairment had the platform to demonstrate how these technologies operate.

The Executive Director of the Ghana Blind Union, Dr. Peter Obeng Asamoah asked the Government to ensure that the reading devices are made accessible to the visually impaired.

Deputy Minister of Education Rev. John Ntim Fordjour said the government will do everything possible to ensure that no child is left behind in the provision of inclusive education. Government he noted, has already taken such steps by donating to the Akropong School for the Blind and will see to it that adequate investment is channelled towards supporting the visually impaired.

A student with visual impairment appealed to the government to make education affordable and accessible to the visually disabled.
