I am open to wider conversation on Education – President Akufo-Addo

President Akufo-Addo says he is open to a broader conversation on Ghana’s education system and its impact on national development.

He noted that the discussion should be centered on how much money society is prepared to devote to education and its ramifications on feeding the children, public scholarship, payments of nursing and teacher trainee allowances, among others.

President Akufo-Addo said this at a meeting with the leadership of the National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS), at the Jubilee House.

“There are some powerful forces against the free SHS who are eager to curtail the initiative, despite the huge investment in the sector,” he noted.

The NUGS President, Dennis Appiah-Larbi, called on the government to prioritise infrastructure development in basic schools.

On government’s school feeding program, Mr. Appiah-Larbi described the amount allocated to the fund as woefully inadequate. He hoped President Akufo-Addo would pay critical attention to it because of implications on the UN sustainable development goal of malnutrition and ending hunger.

Mr.Appiah-Larbi also spoke about the no guarantor policy on the students loan scheme.
