An Author Kofi Genfi has advised dark-skinned women to appreciate their skin colour. Speaking at the launch of a book titled ‘The Dark Girl’, Mr Genfi, noted that a lot of African women ignorantly apply harsh creams and cosmetics to enhance their skin colour. He cautioned women to be wary of the harmful chemicals sometimes contained in these body creams to avoid skin cancer.

Skin lightening in Africa is not a new phenomenon as it has been practised by many for decades. Mr. Genfi, said one should not be influenced by others to bleach.
Government declared 2019 a Year of Return, which saw African diasporas troop into the country, excited to be associated with the black race. At the launch, Radio Ghana caught up with one Joseph Milord who was in the country for the year of return. He said he considers Ghana as his second home.

The vision of the book, according to the author, is to unify all black people to celebrate the dark-skinned woman. He translates the journey of a ‘dark girl’ in three phases: Her adolescent years when she realises she is treated differently because of how she looks, her matured years when she is forced to confront how the world views her and how she views herself and lastly, her coronated years as the ‘dark Queen’ when she reaches self-actualization through discovering her beauty.
