The National Association of Bimoba, Moba and Gurmas (NABMAG) says it has made significant progress in its efforts to have the Bimoba language formally included in Ghana’s national language development programme.
In an update signed by its President, Amos Konsab, NABMAG said the Head of the Bureau of Ghana Languages had confirmed the Bureau’s commitment to bringing Bimoba on board.
The assurance followed a meeting between the NABMAG leadership and officials of the Bureau to discuss the recognition, preservation and promotion of the Bimoba language.
According to the Bureau, work is currently underway to add Bimoba, Mampruli and Wala to the programme as part of efforts to develop and protect Ghanaian languages.
NABMAG to support implementation
The Bureau also stated that NABMAG would play a central role when implementation begins. The Association has therefore been urged to remain engaged and provide the necessary cooperation throughout the process.
The Head of the Bureau further revealed that plans were far advanced for a formal launch of the programme in November 2026 at the National Theatre in Accra.
The launch will follow a similar process used for other Ghanaian languages already included in the programme.
Fieldwork planned for Bimoba-speaking areas
As part of preparations, officers from the Bureau of Ghana Languages are expected to embark on field visits to Bimoba-speaking communities.
The visits will focus on collecting linguistic data and other information required for the proper documentation and development of the language.
NABMAG described the development as a major milestone for the Bimoba people, saying it would help safeguard their language, culture and identity for future generations.
Call for collective effort
The Association is calling on traditional rulers, scholars, language experts, youth groups, organisations and all Bimobas to support the initiative.
It stressed that the success of the project would depend on unity and the active participation of all stakeholders.
NABMAG also assured its members that it would continue to monitor the process and keep the public updated.
The Association noted that including Bimoba in the national programme would create a strong platform for preserving and advancing the language while strengthening the cultural identity of the Bimoba people.
“Together, we can preserve, promote and advance the Bimoba language for present and future generations,” the statement concluded.
