The 1989 year group of the Bolgatanga Senior High School (Big Boss) has restocked the school’s library with 370 copies of various textbooks valued at GH₵15,000.00 to help improve upon academic performance of the school.
The textbooks were made up of all the core and elective subjects such as English Language, Mathematics, Integrated Science and Social Studies, Economics, Physics, Biology, Chemistry, Animal Husbandry, Information and Communication Technology (ICT) and General Agriculture among others.
The organising secretary of the 1989 year group, Mr Ayeriga Azeriya, who presented the books to the school on behalf of the leader of the year group, Mr Mark Awiah, indicated that the recent performance of the school was a source of worry to all stakeholders and urgent steps were needed to address the challenges.
He expressed optimism that the books would help the students excel at the West Africa Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) and proceed for further studies to help contribute to the region and the nation as a whole.
He entreated the students to stay away from rioting and make good use of the books to help attract more support for the school.
Mr Azeriya further advised the students to desist from focusing so much of their time on social media but instead learn how to read hard to pass their examinations and to build upon their self-esteem, confidence, creativity and social awareness.
The headmaster of the school, Ababu Afelibeik who received the books on behalf of management and board of governors, expressed gratitude to the 89-year group for the support and said it would help promote effective academic work and improve students’ performance.
Mr Afelibeik disclosed that government only supplies textbooks for core subjects to schools and as a result, students always found it difficult to get access to relevant elective subject textbooks to study due to the extreme poverty situation of some parents to buy the textbooks.
The headmaster stated that there was the need to encourage and support the education of the children in order for them to be future leaders who would contribute significantly to the development of the region and the country as a whole.
The headmaster indicated that the school which has a student population of 2,000 was faced with infrastructural and logistical challenges and therefore appealed to the group and other year groups to assist the school to solve some of the challenges.
The girls’ prefect of the school, Olivia Somtim Tobigpoka, thanked the ‘Tangabiisi’ for their efforts and pledged on behalf of her colleagues to use the textbooks purposefully to improve their academic performance especially at the West Africa Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) level.
