The Ministry of Education, the Ghana Education Service (GES) and the National Teachers Council are commemorating teachers in the country as part of this year’s World Teachers Day. As part of the occasion, some teachers will be celebrated with awards for their sacrifices and outstanding performance, especially amid a pandemic.

The event which was held in Sunyani is under the theme: “Teachers wanted: Reclaiming Teaching and Learning for Human-centred Recovery’’.

Speaking to GBC News, the General Secretary of the Ghana National Association of Teachers, GNAT Thomas Musah spoke of the contribution of teachers to the development of the country though they are faced with numerous challenges.

He appealed to the government to address pertinent challenges such as poor remuneration to enable the teachers to do their work.

‘’We need to encourage people to go into the profession of teachers because it is the mother of all professions. Today is a day that the whole country should celebrate teachers and wish them well. Aside from celebrating them, let us all take time and look at the challenges confronting the teaching profession’’.

On the issue of the Teacher’s Licensure Examination which has generated concerns among prospective teachers, Mr. Musah said the Association is taking stock of the prevailing issues in order to take a tangible decision on it.

‘’Regarding the Licensure Exams and the challenges with the results, we have requested for the details of it to enable us to make informed decisions on the matter”, according to Mr. Musah.

UTAG on World Teachers Day

Meanwhile the University Teachers Association of Ghana, UTAG says they have nothing to celebrate as teachers are observing Teacher’s Day the world over. This is because their conditions of service are not worth celebrating.

In an interview, President of the University of Ghana Chapter of UTAG, Dr Samuel Nkumbaan, he said the Association will proceed on their intended nationwide strike on Friday, October 8, 2021, if the government does not give in to its demands for better salaries and improved conditions of service.

This is after the government failed to reach a compromise with UTAG in a meeting earlier this week.

“UTAG members have found themselves in-between the hard rock and the hard ground. There is no celebration for us as far as our conditions of service are deplorable and people are hungry and so in hunger I wonder how somebody celebrates but its memorable that we are recognised this day and we would take some bit of happiness in the fact that we are being appreciated and remembered across the globe as teachers”, according to President the University of Ghana Chapter of UTAG, Dr. Samuel Nkumbaan.
