The Ghana Education Service (GES) has announced that this year’s nationwide promotion examinations for teachers will proceed as scheduled on Monday, 29 December, and Tuesday, 30 December 2025, with a strict directive that only candidates with official index numbers will be allowed into the examination halls.

In a statement dated 26 December 2025 and signed by the Acting Deputy Director-General (Management Services), Prof. Smile Dzisi, the Service said all logistical and administrative preparations for the two-day exercise have been completed, allowing eligible teachers to write their papers as planned.

According to the timetable, applicants seeking promotion to Assistant Director II and Principal Superintendent will sit their examinations on Monday, 29 December, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon. Candidates vying for Assistant Director I and Deputy Director positions will write their papers on Tuesday, 30 December, within the same time frame.

GES explained that the shortlist was generated strictly based on approved eligibility criteria and the required documentation, which resulted in some applicants being excluded. Those who qualified, the statement said, have already received SMS notifications containing their staff ID, index number and designated examination centre.

The Service emphasised that the promotion examination is “strictly by index number” and cautioned that any teacher who has not received an official SMS with a corresponding index number should not report to any examination centre, as they will not be permitted to write. Candidates are also required to present a valid national identification card and to clearly indicate both their staff ID and index number on all answer booklets.

GES, however, provided an avenue for redress for teachers who believe they were unfairly excluded. Educators who were last promoted in or before 2021, possess the requisite qualifications, applied for the current promotion cycle but neither received an SMS nor appeared on regional or district shortlists may submit their last promotion letter and proof of application to their Regional Education Office for review.

The statement urged all candidates to strictly adhere to the outlined guidelines to ensure a smooth and credible examination process. It added that enquiries should be directed through the officially provided telephone numbers and email addresses, and that any further updates will be communicated only through formal GES channels.
