Government is to establish an Applied Technology High School to develop more skills towards boosting the entrepreneurial spirit in the youth.

This will be spearheaded by the Technical and Vocational Education and Training, TVET under the Ministry of Education.

Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia who announced this at the launch of the Ghana TVET Service in Accra, said the impact of Technical and Vocational Training cannot be over-emphasized in the development of the economy.

”Ghana cannot be left behind when the world is gradually moving away from the acquisition of numerous Certificates to skills development. This is why the government is focused on developing the TVET Sector to make it more attractive to the youth”.

Over the years, the Technical and Vocational Education and Training, TVET Sector has suffered an image crisis over public perception of being the refuge of students who are not academically endowed.

Vice President Bawumia said government since 2017 has streamlined TVET to ensure that the center becomes a strong force in the educational sector. Dr. Bawumia explained that the Applied Technology High school will mainly focus on skills development for the job market.

Reiterating the government’s commitment to make TVET one of the best in the Sub-region, Vice-President Bawumia entreated parents to encourage their children to take up Technical and Vocational Training.

The Director-General of TVET, Mawusi Nudekor Awity in a remark said TVET has received global recognition as it churns out human resources ready for the job market. She pledged the commitment of the Ghana TVET to live up to expectations.

The German Ambassador to Ghana Daniel Krull commended the government for the initiative. He said Germany is ready to commit funds to support vocational training as it is key for the Ghana Beyond Aid agenda towards inclusive growth, especially for the teeming unemployed youth.

Launch of the Ghana TVET Service was on the theme Shaping Ghana’s Industrialization Drive through Skills Acquisition for National Development.
