President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has urged educators to help reform the country’s educational sector by introducing methods to make education more practical, and less theoretical.

Interacting with the winners of this year’s National Science and Mathematics Quiz (NSMQ), St. Peter’s Senior High School who returned from an international competition in Portugal recently, the President urged the Ministry of Education to take up the challenge to revise the schools’ curricula.

“The ministry must try and reform the curricula and take more seriously the infusion of more practicals in order to produce graduates that would solve national problems,” he said.

With that, the President said the future would be bright as far as education and Ghana’s development was concerned.

His comments were in response to a concern raised by one of the students, Kwaku Annoh Kissie, who lamented the current educational system placed more focus on theories, instead of practical approaches.

“We can only explain and describe everything but we cannot apply anything to everyday situation.”

“In Portugal, we realised that we were far behind in so many areas because the others knew so many things that we didn’t know and they are more practical with what they did,” he stated.

“This is one of the problems we are facing as a country and I believe if our educational system is geared towards a more practical one and exposes the students to hands on work and not just reading of books and answering questions, we would go a long way to improve our educational system and help develop this nation as a whole,” Kwaku Annoh Kissie said.

He expressed appreciation to the President for implementing the Free Senior High School (SHS) policy, adding that, the policy had great chance of giving many students the opportunity to benefit from their experience in Portugal.

He thanked the St. Peter’s old students and Primetime, the organisers of the NSMQ, for the opportunity.

“It has made people realise that there are intellectuals in Ghana and have the ability to think far as it is not just the other world out there but there are people in this side of the world who can express intelligence,” he said.
