Parliament has approved the Public Universities Bill after its second reading. The Bill which was withdrawn and re-laid in the House in November this year seeks to harmonize structures for the administration of public universities.
The Bill when passed, will give government, the power to appoint a majority of members of the University Council. The Council will then have the power to appoint and dismiss public university officials.
The Bill will give the President the power to dissolve the University Council which will now have power to appoint a chancellor.
The University Council will be able to control the finances of the university and determine the allocation of funds.
Speaking on the floor of Parliament Minority leader, Haruna Iddrisu, said the input of stakeholders who will be affected by the Bill must be thoroughly engaged.
Minister of Education, Dr. Mathew Opoku Prempeh says the Public University Bill in its current form incorporates every concern from stakeholders.
He said extensive consultation with stakeholders which necessitated the relaying of the bill compelled its withdrawal.
Speaking on the floor of Parliament, Dr. Opoku Prempeh said the Education Committee of Parliament will again invite concerned stakeholders to allay their fears.
