A new chapter of inter-ministerial collaboration has been opened following the signing of three Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) between the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of the Interior, paving the way for the Ghana Prisons Service to produce sanitary pads, school uniforms and school furniture for public schools across the country.
The agreements are aimed at strengthening local production while using vocational training and productive work as tools for inmate rehabilitation.
Speaking at the signing ceremony, the Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, described the initiative as a practical step toward local production and inmate rehabilitation, noting that productive engagement of inmates is key to reducing recidivism while supporting schools with quality, locally made supplies.
On his part, the Minister for the Interior, Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak explained that the agreement sets minimum production allocations for the Prisons Service and introduces a joint implementation committee to ensure accountability, value for money and timely delivery.
The Director-General of Prisons, Mrs. Patience Baffoe-Bonnie (Esq.), welcomed the partnership as a game changer that will reposition the Prisons Service, equip inmates with employable skills and help break the cycle of recidivism.
