The Governing Council of the University of Cape Coast (UCC) has officially confirmed that the tenure of Prof. Johnson Nyarko Boampong as Vice-Chancellor ended on September 18, 2025. The date he reached the compulsory retirement age of 60.

The decision was announced following the Council’s 124th Regular Meeting held on November 27, 2025.

In a statement signed by the Council Secretary, Gideon Enoch Abbeyquaye, the Council explained that the review of Prof. Boampong’s tenure was influenced by two key developments: the discontinuance of the case John Mevemeo v. University of Cape Coast and Prof. Johnson Nyarko Boampong, and a directive from the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) reaffirming the mandatory retirement age for public university staff.

Following the review, the Council concluded that the two-year extension earlier granted to Prof. Boampong violated provisions of the 1992 Constitution regarding retirement. Consequently, the extension letter issued in July 2023 has been overridden.

“To ensure compliance, Council has revised the end of his second term to 18th September 2025, the date on which he attained 60 years,” the statement noted.

The decision formally brings Prof. Boampong’s tenure to a close and sets the stage for the University to continue its transitional processes in accordance with statutory and regulatory requirements.
