A severe rainstorm has ripped through the Adankwaman Senior High School (SHS) in the Assin South District of the Central Region, causing extensive damage to key infrastructure just days before schools are due to reopen.

The storm, accompanied by strong winds, lasted several hours on Tuesday, October 7, 2025, tearing off the roofs of a six-unit classroom block, boys’ dormitory, dining hall, and several pavilions.

Desks, teaching materials, and other property were also destroyed in the downpour.

Although no casualties were recorded  as students are still on vacation, school authorities say the damage could force a postponement of reopening, originally scheduled for Saturday, October 11, 2025.

The affected structures are currently unsafe for use, and the school has no immediate alternative spaces for teaching and learning. Established over 40 years ago, Adankwaman SHS still relies on some mud-built facilities, many of which are in poor condition.

A team from the Assin South District office of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), led by District Director Nicholas Adusei Sarpong, visited the school to assess the extent of the damage.

Mr. Sarpong described the situation as “alarming” and said a full report would be submitted to the relevant authorities for swift intervention.

The District Chief Executive for Assin South, Jonathan Birikorang, and the District Director of Education, Isaac Opoku Nkum, also toured the site and pledged coordinated support to help restore the school’s facilities.
