National Reading Radio Programme records 50% listenership

End line survey of the National Reading Radio Programme, NRRP indicates the programme achieved a fifty percent Listenership, among beneficiaries within a year and half implementation. This is an increase in listenership which was at 27 percent at the commencement of the programme. 57 percent of children also moved up to a higher English reading proficiency during the period. This was disclosed by Mission Director of Education, US Agency for International Development, USAID, Rasheena Reid at a handing over ceremony of learning materials to the Ministry of Education and its agencies, at Broadcasting House in Accra. The ceremony brings to end production of the National Reading Radio Programme, NRRP broadcasts by USAID and to officially hand over the programme to the Ministry of Education, for the continued availability of educational materials for students and teachers. The National Reading Radio Programme was launched by the Ministry of Education and the Ghana Education Service in collaboration with the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation and USAID in June 2020, as part of the Ghana Learning Radio Programme. It was an educational intervention to mitigate learning loss owing to closure of schools as a result of the Covid 19 pandemic. Mission Director of USAID, Rasheena Reid said broadcast of the programme on radio was a unique opportunity to reach millions of children.

Deputy Minister of Education Rev. John Ntim Forjour gave the assurance that the programme will be sustained. He was grateful for the partnerships that made the programme a success.

The National Reading Radio Programme was broadcast on Radio platforms of the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation across the country. Director-General of the Corporation, Prof Amin Alhassan pledged commitment of the Corporation towards any new phase of the programme.
