Wa, Upper West – President John Dramani Mahama has announced plans to convert Senior High Schools, SHSs in rural communities with large catchment areas into boarding institutions.
The President made the announcement during an inspection of ongoing GETFund projects at Han Senior High School as part of his two-day Resetting Ghana Tour of the Upper West Region.

He said the school, originally established as a Community Day SHS, would be upgraded with boys’ and girls’ dormitories before being officially redesignated as a boarding school.
President Mahama explained that the Community Day concept would now focus on densely populated areas where students can easily commute from home, while rural schools would be converted into boarding institutions.
He also announced that government had secured a US$300 million World Bank facility to expand infrastructure and end the double-track system.

Sixteen new Senior High Schools are also being constructed to ease congestion, with the President targeting the complete elimination of double-track by the end of 2027.
He said the reforms would enable students to attend school at the same time, increase teacher-student contact hours and improve academic performance.
President Mahama described the GETFund projects as investments financed with taxpayers’ money and pledged to return to Han SHS to commission the completed facilities.
