The European Union (EU) has awarded 446 Ghanaians scholarships under its prestigious Erasmus+ Programme for 2026 to study, train and participate in academic exchange programmes in Europe.
The scholarships include 28 students selected for the Erasmus Mundus Joint Master’s programme, with 14 receiving fully funded scholarships to study at top universities across Europe. Another 418 students and staff have been selected under the International Credit Mobility programme, which supports short-term academic exchanges.
The announcement was made in Accra during a pre-departure event organised by the EU in partnership with the German International Development Cooperation (GIZ) and the Ghanaian-European Centre.
The Erasmus+ Programme is the European Union’s flagship initiative that promotes education, training, youth development and sports. It also supports social inclusion, digital transformation, green development and youth participation in democratic governance.
Speaking at the event on Friday, July 24, 2026, the European Union Ambassador to Ghana, H.E. Rune Skinnebach, reaffirmed the EU’s commitment to expanding educational opportunities for young Africans.
He said the EU places great importance on education, youth and mobility, adding that the Global Gateway Youth Mobility for Africa initiative is investing heavily in exchange programmes between Africa and Europe.
According to him, the Erasmus+ Programme is an investment in people, knowledge and long-term partnerships that will strengthen cooperation between the two continents.
One of the scholarship recipients, Derrick Kyei, who will pursue a Master’s degree in Sports Ethics and Integrity, described the award as a life-changing opportunity.
He said the programme would allow him to study at world-class universities, build valuable professional networks and gain international exposure that would help him contribute to the development of sports in Africa.
The Erasmus+ Programme is funded by the European Union and supports international cooperation in higher education. Between 2021 and 2027, the EU has committed €26.2 billion to the programme to expand learning opportunities, strengthen partnerships between European and partner-country institutions, and improve skills development through education and vocational training.
