The debate over whether corporal punishment should be reintroduced in Ghanaian schools has resurfaced after Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu questioned whether the practice should return as part of efforts to address growing indiscipline among students.

The Minister raised the issue during a two-day National Conference on Stemming the Growing Indiscipline in Schools in Sunyani, where participants are examining challenges including cyberbullying, artificial intelligence-enabled cheating, drug abuse, gang activity, weakening teacher authority and parental responsibility.

The remarks have prompted renewed public discussion. While some argue that corporal punishment could help restore discipline in schools, others maintain that physical punishment can harm children and that schools should instead adopt safer and more effective disciplinary approaches.

Speaking on GTV’s Breakfast Show on Wednesday, the General Secretary of the National Council of Parent-Teacher Associations (NCPTAs), Raphael Kofi Gapson, shared parents’ perspectives on whether corporal punishment should be reintroduced and whether it remains an effective tool for maintaining discipline in schools.
